Al
Morrow’s rowing history is legendary – a Hamilton native,
he rowed on Canada’s National Team in 1970, 1971, and from 1974 to
1976. St. Catharines was his home club from 1970 to 1972.
He has been coaching since 1976 at the club,
university and national level. Al was Head Coach of Canada’s Women’s
Team form 1990 to 2005. During that time his athletes – including
Marnie McBean, Kathleen Heddle, Emma Robinson, Alison Korn and
Lesley Thompson-Willi - won a total of seven medals: 4 Gold, 1
Silver and 2 Bronze in the Olympics in Barcelona (1992), Atlanta,
(1996) and Sydney (2000).
As
well, athletes Al coached won a total of 17 medals at the World Rowing
Championships between 1989 and 2005. He is also the member of not one but
seven Halls of Fame – including the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.
Al
is also connected to St. Catharines through his wife, the former Julia
Santavicca who rowed for both Lakeport High School and for the St.
Catharines Rowing Club.
Al
and Julia live in London and have four children – Claire, Gregory, Stefan
and Marisa. He is currently the Women’s National Team Development Coach
