DESCRIPTION
- 1.1 ORGANIZATION: St. Catharines Rowing Club (SCRC)
- 1.2 TITLE: Head Coach
- 1.3 JOB CATEGORY: Full-time staff
- 1.4 RESPONSIBLE TO: Vice President, Rowing
2.0 GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Reporting to the Vice President, Rowing, the Head Coach will assist in the development of the club programs and oversee the year-round, day-to-day operations of the club and its programs. These programs include competitive Under 17, Under 19, Under 23, and Senior and Masters rowing, as well as the Youth Rowing Camp and Junior Development Program, in concert with the junior coach, and the masters non-competitive program.
The Head Coach will also promote and oversee the club’s spring High School rowing program and assist the St. Catharines Rowing League as needed. Familiarity with RCA NCCP Coaching Pathways and SCRC operations is essential.
3.0 SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
3.1 ON-WATER ROWING PROGRAM OPERATIONS
- 3.1.1 Manage and oversee safety and health protocols for any summer employees.
- 3.1.2 Assist in promoting SCRC's Safe Sport policies.
- 3.1.3 Promote compliance with the club's on-water Safety Code.
- 3.1.4 Collaborate with the Rowing Committee on all SCRC on-water programs.
- 3.1.5 Assist in outreach and recruitment for area schools and community groups.
- 3.1.6 Attend St. Catharines regattas, assisting with preparation and teardown.
- 3.1.7 Represent SCRC at away regattas, coordinating trailer logistics as needed.
- 3.1.8 Participate in relevant meetings and partnerships.
- 3.1.9 Bring recommendations to relevant meetings.
3.2 COACHING OVERSIGHT
- 3.2.1 Recruit coaches, and ensure compliance with coach certification policies.
- 3.2.2 Develop professional development plans for all coaches.
- 3.2.3 Mentor and provide feedback to coaches on training programs, athlete selection, and equipment.
- 3.2.4 Manage timely regatta entries in coordination with coaches and the Club Administrator.
- 3.2.5 Oversee equitable equipment assignments across programs.
3.3 EQUIPMENT AND FACILITY
- 3.3.1 Educate athletes and coaches on equipment maintenance protocols.
- 3.3.2 Facilitate cleanliness in the boathouse and compound.
- 3.3.3 Ensure safety resources are well-maintained and accessible.
- 3.3.4 Oversee shell-house infrastructure, equipment storage, and organization.
- 3.3.5 Oversee all boat repair and maintenance, delegating as needed.
3.4 ADMINISTRATION
- 3.4.1 Monitor and assist with budgets for programs under Head Coach responsibility.
- 3.4.2 Oversee and evaluate components of the SCRC Strategic Plan related to on-water programs.
- 3.4.3 Stay updated on rowing trends and developments.
- 3.4.4 Keep current with Rowing Canada Aviron and Row Ontario’s initiatives.
- 3.4.5 Prepare reports for the V.P. Rowing and the Board of Directors.
- 3.4.6 Assist Communications Committee with promotional materials as requested.
- 3.4.7 Attend Board of Directors meetings as required.
- 3.4.8 Perform other duties as required by the V.P. Rowing.
4.0 LEVEL OF AUTHORITY
- 4.1 The Head Coach will work with the Rowing Committee but will report to and be evaluated by the Vice President, Rowing.
- 4.2 The Head Coach has authority for daily management of program areas within SCRC policies and budgets.
5.0 POSITION REQUIREMENTS
5.1 EDUCATION
A post-secondary degree or diploma in Sport Management, Business, Kinesiology, Volunteer Management, or an applicable field is preferred.
5.2 EXPERIENCE
Required: Knowledge and passion for rowing, experience in rowing program design and management. Preferred: 2-3 years of volunteer management experience.
5.3 SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
- 5.3.1 RCA NCCP “Performance Coach” Certification or actively working toward it.
- 5.3.2 Skilled in safe operation of a fully loaded truck and trailer; valid Canadian driver’s license and PCOC.
- 5.3.3 Strong organizational, management, and interpersonal skills.
- 5.3.4 Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- 5.3.5 Self-motivated, self-directed, and problem-solving skills.
- 5.3.6 Sound judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- 5.3.7 Budget management experience and office software proficiency.
- 5.3.8 Ability to travel and work evenings or weekends as required.
6.0 EMPLOYMENT TERMS
Upon successful completion of a police records check, the successful applicant will enter a Contract of Employment as a full-time employee of the St. Catharines Rowing Club.
