St. Catharines Rowing Club Seasonal part-time position. Start date: September 8, 2025. End date: October 17, 2025.
Position Summary The Fall Junior Development Program is for athletes who are interested in developing their rowing potential. Athletes who have participated in youth rowing camp and junior development are welcome, however no experience is necessary to join. In the program, athletes will be sorted into boatings with others of similar ability and the focus will be on to progress from where they are at, while also gaining experience rowing in different conditions, types of boats, and with different crew members. The program is intended to act as a launchpad for athletes who want to join their high school team or the club competitive program next summer. The program runs Monday through Friday from 4:00-6:00 pm, with athletes participating in a 2x/week or 3x/week option. The primary objective of the Fall Junior Development Coach is to ensure effective delivery of the program, so that participants progress in their rowing ability in a safe, fun, and sporting atmosphere. The Coach reports to the Junior Head Coach.
Responsibilities
Work as a member of a team to provide excellent rowing instruction and coaching to all participants in a fun and supportive environment.
Plan and implement program activities (both on land and on water) that are developmentally appropriate for athletes who have different rowing abilities and potential.
Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
Actively create a welcoming and fun environment for all participants and coaches.
Qualifications The successful candidate will possess the following competencies:
Compliance with Every Coach Certifiedpolicy. Must have completed (1) NCCP Coach Initiation in Sport, (2) RCA Rowing Essentials, and (3) Making Ethical Decisions prior to August 31, 2025.
Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of rowing.
Positive leadership skills and ability to take control of a situation.
Excellent awareness of safety.
Ability to assess situations and make sound and reasonable decisions.
Patience and listening skills for working with children.
Pleasure Craft Operators Card (BoatSmart) by August 31, 2025.
Standard First Aid and CPR A considered an asset.
Completed Criminal Records check (Vulnerable Sector Screening) - must be current.
Preference to applicants with post-secondary training (completed or in progress) in kinesiology, child studies, recreation, sport management or other relevant field.
Preference given to SCRC athletes in good standing with the Club.
Preference given to coaches with RCA Coaching certification.
Hours of Work and Compensation This is a seasonal part-time position that starts on September 8, 2025 and ends on October 17, 2025. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 3:30 - 6:00 pm. Compensation: $18-20 / hour depending on experience.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Working conditions are primarily outdoors including in sun, wind, and rain. This position requires heavy lifting of equipment (motors, boats, oars, etc) and the physical ability to assist rowers in emergencies on the water. Swimming ability is required. There is a large physical component to this position, as physical work is required for program set-up and delivery and facility and equipment upkeep.
