These groupings reflect the competitive environment of the club, where athletes may have varying levels of experience, aspirations, and performance metrics. Top competitive athletes will get priority in equipment assignments, coaching availability, selection, and lineups. Athletes not meeting performance expectations will not receive priority in these areas.

Furthermore, participants of this program are expected to attend and commit to consistent training and the regatta schedule provided. Participants must be committed to their selected crew, supportive teammates, and contributors to the club environment. Event lineups will be highly dependent on athlete attendance and daily effort. The junior programs consist of athletes that have already participated in a high school competitive program.  These athletes are interested in training daily to improve their skills and fitness as athletes/coxswains with the St. Catharines Rowing Club.  It is the goal of this program to continue the skill development of sweep and sculling with the ultimate goal of winning Henley Gold!  Priority boats for the summer are based on the Coach’s decision as to what is the best chance to win at the Canadian Henley Regatta.

The St. Catharines Rowing Club is a highly competitive Club.  Rowing in the top boat is not a right – it is earned through effort, achievement in practice, experience and the ability to race under pressure.  Athletes are given many hours of practice and instructional time to further their development.  The decision of who rows in top boats will be made in order that the team may be successful and achieve Program and Club goals.

Athlete selection for boat selection is exclusively the decision of the Coaching staff.  These Coaches observe your athletes in practice and get to know their strengths and weaknesses in the sport.  They therefore have the right to decide the boating and seating arrangements.

Athletes are encouraged to discuss their strengths and weaknesses with their Coaches during practice sessions at appropriate times during practice or after practice when equipment is put away.  We ask that such discussions be limited to practice times only and not to approach the Coaches during a regatta.  We also ask that at all times, the inside of the boathouse and the dock is off limits to parents and friends.

Parents will not approach Coaching staff during regatta days with questions regarding line-up, race strategies, or boating positions.  Should you have questions, the Coaching staff will be happy to set up a time to discuss your athlete’s abilities and progress.  Discussions will be limited to your athlete’s performance only.  Coaches will not comment on other player’s performances or other Coaches decisions.

The Rowing Club is grateful to all parents for their numerous ways of contributing.  Without parents, we would be lacking in volunteers.  There are many areas in which parents can contribute to the Club. If you are interested contact Kate Hingston [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to see racing from the water as well as be a part of the 120 years of rowing at the Club.

The Slate of 19 Candidates for the St. Catharines Rowing Club Board of Directors

Sam Baio Profile
I have served as a SCRC board member for over 25 years (with a 5-year sabbatical). I have been a CEO of public company and my skill would be in marketing and executing fundraising and sponsorship ideas and programs. I produce a volunteer barbeque for the St. Catharines Invitational regatta. I also have the ability to produce clothing products and to develop a branding program to sell SCRC T-shirts, Jackets, Hoodies on-line locally and throughout Canada and North America.
Chris Blackwood PROFILE
I have been involved in the Club for the past two decades in a variety of positions including Rec League rower and coach, Masters rower, and safety boat coordinator. Since 2018 I have served on the SCRC Board as Director and Secretary.

My rowing experiences began in High School, rowing for Hamilton Collegiate Institute in 1974. Both of my daughters rowed High School and Club. Their participation inspired me to join the Rec League in 2000 and then Masters in 2005. Starting in 2015, I began to participate in other club activities including Rec League coaching and safety boat duties during Club, High School and Henley regattas. It is my desire to continue to serve as a member of the Board through 2021, providing service and leadership to the Club and its members.
Rick Crooker PROFILE
I have been the president of SCRC for the past 2 years and I have served on the board since 2016. Prior to that, I was a director of Rowing Canada for 4 years.

My working career encompassed 12 years at the Royal Bank of Canada and 20 years at American Express after which I founded a management consulting practice with my wife.

I attended the University of Pennsylvania where I won 2 national rowing Championships. I rowed for SCRC from 1966 through 1972 where I was a member of the 1968 Olympic 8+ and in 1972 won Henley Royal in a 4+. As an SCRC master’s rower, I was a member of a 4+ that went undefeated in national and international competition for 9 years.

I would proudly serve on the board again in 2021 as we hope to return to a full rowing and regatta schedule and attend Henley Royal Regatta with 2 (1 men's, 1 women's) qualified crews.
Dave Derry PROFILE
Having rowed at the high school, university and club levels and coached at those levels as well, I have an appreciation of the needs of the club athletes. Experience officiating at the World Championships and Olympic Games has given me the opportunity to witness first-hand the ultimate goal of athletic endeavour.

As the Executive Director of the Ontario Rowing Association (1987 to 2000) and the Domestic Development Officer – Sport Technical for Rowing Canada Aviron (2006 to 2016), I am aware of the challenges clubs face to not only survive but thrive. Thus, I have an understanding of the continuum of the development pathway of athletes, coaches and volunteers at rowing clubs – from rowing for fun to Olympic gold – and would look forward to serving another year on the Board.
Brian Fisher PROFILE
My participation with the SCRC began in 1977 as a Junior athlete, progressing into the Senior ranks, and ultimately to the National Team. My final year of rowing was back with the SCRC in 1986, along with beginning as a volunteer High School Coach. In 2018 I became the Lead Coach of the U19 Men’s program. An opportunity presented itself to become a member of the SCRC Board of Directors in 1994, and I’ve stayed a Director since, the last number of years as the VP of Finance.

I ask to be considered as a 2021 Director due to my passionate belief in the positive impact, and the awesome opportunities the Club can create for the youth in our Community. Someone ensured the Club was available when I needed it, and I now feel it’s my turn to ensure it continues to be available for all in the years to come.
Michele Fisher PROFILE
I first became a member of the club in 1976 as an athlete, as a coach starting in 1985, and then as a member of the board since 2016.

I am currently the SCRC Lead Jr Women’s Coach, acting Sr Women coach, and previously have led the U17 and U23/Sr programs.

My board participation includes fundraising such as Silent Auctions at the Captain’s Dinner, Henley Royal fundraising /Alumni engagement, social events, Tag Day, Sport4Ontario. Other activities include leading Try it Days.

I believe in giving back to the athletes and the club which supports them, through good governance, as well as providing the necessary resources to work towards excellence in rowing. Part of those resources includes my current enrollment in the Advanced Coaching Diploma with the Canadian Sports Institute – Ontario, which will enable me to deploy the best practices in coaching.
Louise Hastings PROFILE
I first “discovered “rowing in 1995 when my daughter started to row for her high school and soon realized what I had been missing. I did an LTR in Toronto in 1996 and after our move to St. Catharines in 1999, joined SCRC and have been rowing and involved ever since.

I have been a director since 2007 and have planned numerous events including the Captain’s Dinner, Tag Day, TRY-IT Day. I have recruited our sponsors and have written grant applications to Trillium, Canadian Red Cross, and Service Canada and Ontario. I am also an umpire.

Being a part The St. Catharines Rowing Club that offers so much to our community is a privilege. I hope to continue as a director and to work with so many amazing and talented people to see SCRC grow and give rowing to so many.
Lorna Hay-Gaudet PROFILE
I have been a SCRC member for over 20 years. I am a master rower, a volunteer, and an umpire.

As a director I have been responsible for Pasta Nights during Henley. I also have worked on Tag Day, the Captain’s Dinner, and fundraising. For the fall I revised the COVID-19 online app with a more people-friendly version.

As a director I could use my strong computer skills helping with regatta registrations and responding to requests for Team Building opportunities. I believe it is important to give back to rowing and feel it would be a privilege to continue to be part of having a voice as a director in making our club a success.
Lauren Kelly PROFILE
I am a student athlete at the University of Notre Dame and have rowed for the St. Catharines Rowing Club since 2014. I have worked for the last year as the Social Media Coordinator for the rowing club and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to promote and grow the identity of this rowing club, to which I owe a great deal. I would welcome the opportunity to continue in this role, in addition to all the responsibilities required of a member of the board.
Craig Kozun-Young PROFILE
Craig Kozun-Young I have served for 1 term as Director on the Board of Directors of the St Catharines Rowing Club. During this past year, I was responsible for gathering information and submitting 18 nominations for Elite Athletes, Builders, Coaches and Umpires to Row Ontario’s Inaugural Hall of Fame. I initiated and worked closely with the Club Captain in our first 2 virtual Ergattas which were fund raising events for SCRC. I also am an official event photographer for SCRC. In the coming year, I would like to work together with other Directors to increase membership in SCRC specifically focused on Masters rowers.

I have family members that have competed for SCRC since 1986 and I have been active as a competitive rower at SCRC since 2012.
Nancy Love PROFILE
I rowed high school, club, coached high school as well as rec, achieved my Level 1 Coaching certificate and started working towards level 2.

I have spent the last 8 years as a Director on the Board responsible for organizing Boat Christenings, helping with the Captain’s dinner and as Master’s Rep the last 3 years.

My education is in accounting but worked in print, advertising and lottery gaming for approx. 15 years, returning to Accounting 12 years ago.

Being a competitive master, I strongly believe rowing can be enjoyed at any stage in life offering benefits physically and mentally creating opportunities for the club to grow and offer more varied programs.
Jim Marino PROFILE
I began my Rowing career in 1968 rowing for High School, SCRC, Brock Uni, Univ of Guelph, and the Canadian National Lightweight Team until 1982. I have been fortunate enough to have won many Gold medals during my competitive career. My involvement in rowing was somewhat paused from 1983 till 1990 as I served in the Canadian Armed Forces. I did Umpire at Regatta's when I was available. I returned to the SCRC in 1991 and held many positions, including SCRC President for 5 years. In 1999 I also became a FISA Umpire and have Umpired at several International events.

My involvement in rowing has afforded me many opportunities and experiences that will last a lifetime. My desire is to give back to the sport what I have so richly received.
Marion Markarian PROFILE

I hold a perspective that comes from being a rower myself, mother of a past high school rower, a long-time volunteer and over the past 6 years, as a Board member. I will strive to continue to put my best into this amazing Club!
Kathy Powell PROFILE
I have served for two terms on the SCRC Board of Directors. During my terms to date, I have worked towards coordinating athlete and coach food for regattas held outside the club. Additionally, I have worked on club policy development.
I have been involved in the St. Catharines Rowing Club since 2013, firstly as a parent of rowers then as a Rec rower and now as a Masters rower. I bring to the Board of Directors more than 20 years’ experience in management, including human resources management, policy development and implementation, strategic planning, and grant writing, among other skills. I am also a serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces with the rank of Lieutenant (Navy) working with the Canadian Cadet Movement where I have more than 15 years’ experience working with youth leadership development.
Bob Schenck PROFILE
I have been involved with the sport of rowing in one form or another since 1975. I started volunteer involvement with the St. Catharines Rowing Alumni in 1984. Headed up Souvenir sales, and Henley party, and then became President on two different occasions in the Alumni.

Co-chair of the Ted Knight Memorial Classic for approximately 14 years, a significant fundraiser for the St. Catharines Rowing Club.

I began my coaching career at St. Francis Catholic High School and carried on for 14 years, coaching both Jr and Sr. Boys programs. Towards the end of coaching, I joined the St. Catharines Rowing Club board to continue supporting the sport. Since joining the board, I have since become VP Rowing and have learned the grassroots of rowing, what with helping organize regattas and the day-to-day operations of the club.

I’m looking forward to continuing my involvement in the sport and give back where I can use my skills the most.

HIGH SCHOOL SWIM TEST PROTOCOL

2020 Swim Test Protocol for Secondary School
File Size: 26 kb
File Type: pdf
Download File

All student athletes must complete the swim test annually unless they can provide certification of Bronze Medallion or higher.
Inability to pass the swim test will result in the student/athlete being ineligible to row.  It is the responsibility of the student/athlete to obtain their own swim test if unable to attend the provided test date/time.

Each athlete will prepare for the test by wearing:
  • Shorts (bathing suit)
  • Socks
  • Tight fitted pants
  • Tight fitted long sleeve shirt

Each athlete will complete all of the following steps:
  1. Enter the pool deck wearing the listed clothing, have a quick shower to make sure you are completely wet.  The organizer will put you into small groups to complete the test
  2. On direction from the organizer, enter the pool by sitting sideways to the pool and roll into the deep end of the pool.
  3. Tread water for four minutes without touching the bottom, side walls or another person in the water.
  4. After successfully treading water for four minutes, complete 4 lengths of the pool swimming any stroke continuously ending up back in the deep end.
  5. Successfully put on a personal flotation device (PFD). TEST IS COMPLETE ONCE THE PFD IS PUT ON SUCCESSFULLY
  6. Remove the PFD, swim to the shallow end and exit the pool.
  7. Check in with the swim test organizer or Life Guard to ensure you are recorded as passing the test.

End of an ERA

All good things (and bad things!) eventually come to an end. The bad things – like this virus – cannot end fast enough. The good things always feel like they end too soon.

Mark Welsh has been the SCRC Captain for the last 14 years. This has been a particularly good thing! During this time, the Club has benefitted from his leadership, program development and professionalism. He has been the “face” of the Club for members, supporters and other Clubs in Canada and the U.S. As Mark said when he announced his decision to make a career change – “As much as I will miss the Club, I’m doing it at a time when you have an opportunity to reflect on how you want to replace the things I do.” He is right. As the Club’s one and only employee, Mark covered a lot of ground and his skills both in boat repair and working with coaches and athletes grew.
Mark Welsh SCRC Captain
Mark Welsh, St. Catharines Rowing Club Captain is stepping down to take on a new opportunity.
As a true professional, Mark has documented the 1001 things he does from January to December. Finding one or more people to handle everything will now be much easier.

We would have wanted to say goodbye in a “non-social distancing” way but we are still going through one of the bad things you want to be done with! If we can hold our November

Captain’s Dinner, then we will have Mark back as our Past Captain and say "Thank You" properly.

The swim assessment is mandatory for all rowers in the beginner program and for those advanced rowers who did not take the test last year. On our first day we will be administering our swim assessment after the regular rowing session. Those who need to pass the test will be escorted from the rowing club to the pool by our instructors.

The assessment is intended to ensure that all rowers feel comfortable in the water and can stay afloat in the rare chance that they should find themselves in the water. Rowers in the beginner program will be required to roll sideways into the water then tread water for 4 minutes with their rowing clothes on (e.g. shorts and t shirt) wearing a banana belt that will be supplied by the rowing school. Then they will be required to swim 4 lengths of the pool, any style, no time limit. Athletes will then put on and take off a PFD in the water.  Advanced rowers will do the same but without a banana belt.

In each session exemptions can be made by parents who are willing to sign provided waiver expressing their confidence in their child's swimming ability.  Alternately proof of Level 8 swimming badge or equivalent is required.  All rowers in the beginner program will be asked to complete the test in their first session and those in the advanced who have not taken the test before.  If rowers are enrolled in more than one session they will only be required to complete the swim test one time.  The Swim Test waiver can be found at:
Full details about the program and the swim test will be e-mailed to parents approximately one week before the program begins.
