Junior National Team Selected by RCA

6/26/2016

VICTORIA, Thursday, June 16, 2016 – Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) announced today their selection of 48 athletes for this year’s Junior National Team which includes teams for both the Can Am Mex Regatta and Junior World Rowing Championships. The Junior National Team is made up of rowers under the age of 19 and come from 21 rowing clubs across the country.
“We were happy with the results from selection trials and believe that this group of athletes has the ability to perform at a high level this summer,” said Peter Cookson, High Performance Director, RCA. “The athletes came in ready to compete for a spot on the team and we saw impressive performances by everyone. The junior team is integral to the development of future senior rowers and we’re very happy with the progress this group is making.”
The Can Am Mex team will take part in a training camp beginning July 11 before competition from July 16 to 17 in Sarasota, Florida. The World Rowing Junior Championships will take place in Rotterdam, Netherlands from August 21 to 28.
Following the selection trials in Welland, Ontario, RCA has confirmed the list of athletes and coaches representing Canada on the Junior National Teams this summer.

6/11/2016

Two rowers who won a total of 13 gold medals and a wrestler who went undefeated at both the Canadian and Ontario university championships are the Niagara Sport Commission athletes of the year for 2015.
Also singled out for praise at the region-wide sports promotion organization’s annual awards breakfast were the outstanding parathlete and Special Olympian of the past year, as well as the top coach and event of the year.
In all, nine awards were presented Thursday at the Holiday Inn in St. Catharines in a ceremony that featured one-time Canadian boxer and current Niagara Falls city Councillor Mike Strange as keynote speaker.
St. Catharines Rowing Club member Daniel De Groot was selected male athlete of the year, topping a nomination list that included his brother and fellow rower David and Evan Littlefield of the Niagara College golf team.
Daniel, who competes for Princeton University at the post-secondary level, won three golds at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, two at the RowOntario Championships and one at the Head of the Welland, all while overcoming a serious injury.
David, the Ontario University Athletics rower of the year, was a double gold winner for Brock at the Canadian University Rowing Association championships and at provincials. He won a bronze medal at the world under-23 championships and was named Brock’s top male athlete.
