End of an ERA...

6/27/2020

All good things (and bad things!) eventually come to an end. The bad things – like this virus – cannot end fast enough. The good things always feel like they end too soon.

Mark Welsh has been the SCRC Captain for the last 14 years. This has been a particularly good thing! During this time, the Club has benefitted from his leadership, program development and professionalism. He has been the “face” of the Club for members, supporters and other Clubs in Canada and the U.S. As Mark said when he announced his decision to make a career change – “As much as I will miss the Club, I’m doing it at a time when you have an opportunity to reflect on how you want to replace the things I do.” He is right. As the Club’s one and only employee, Mark covered a lot of ground and his skills both in boat repair and working with coaches and athletes grew.

Mark Welsh SCRC Captain
Mark Welsh, St. Catharines Rowing Club Captain is stepping down to take on a new opportunity.

As a true professional, Mark has documented the 1001 things he does from January to December. Finding one or more people to handle everything will now be much easier.

We would have wanted to say goodbye in a “non-social distancing” way but we are still going through one of the bad things you want to be done with! If we can hold our November

Captain’s Dinner, then we will have Mark back as our Past Captain and say "Thank You" properly.

Meanwhile, we continue to see close to 80 scullers being able to take advantage of a very empty Henley Island and course. With the 2-metre rule still in effect, 2X, 4X and sweep boats are not permitted. Our athletes and coaches have done a first-class job managing their time on the Island. We have had tremendous support from volunteers handling check-in and check-out for every shift.

SCRC Returns to the Water

6/6/2020

Safety First! Guidelines for entry to the compound and return to rowing are posted at the entry point.
Athletes make the way down the ramp to access the flat early morning water. Pylons provide separation from each other.
Ben Neimi is all set while he waits for other scullers to shove off and begin an early morning row.
Early this morning athletes from the St. Catharines Rowing Club returned to on-water rowing. These pictures are from the the very first shift. In the first stage of return to rowing, athletes are rowing in singles which allows them to maintain a safe distance from each other. There are 5 singles per shift with a coach guiding the athletes.

Celebrating our 2020 Secondary School Graduates

6/4/2020

Picture
For the past couple of years we have taken a picture of as many high school athletes and coaches as we could get seated and standing on rickety old picnic tables stacked dangerously on top of one another. With the hard work and skill of his many years taking the club photo Brian Thorne worked some magic and put together this photo for the seniors. Congratulations to all of our senior athletes graduating from secondary school!
